Your Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist For Your Plumbing System

Spring is here, which means it’s time to start thinking about maintenance tasks you can complete around your home! While we are all probably thinking about landscaping, home renovation projects, decluttering cabinets and drawers, and the typical spring cleaning stuff, there’s one thing we don’t think much about – our plumbing system. Here are the top 5 plumbing items to add to your spring cleaning checklist this year.

1. Check For Leaks

According to the EPA , the average household’s leaks account for about 10,000 gallons of water wasted per year – and 10% of homes have leaks that waste about 90 gallons of water each day. Not only can leaks lead to skyrocketing water bills, but it can also lead to water damage if not taken care of quickly. Unfortunately, some leaks are hidden and not as obvious as one might think. That’s why it’s important to know the signs of leaks, such as:

  • Unexplained Increase in Water Bills
  • Reduced Water Pressure
  • Mold and Mildew – or Musty Smelling Rooms
  • Water Stains on Ceiling
  • Peeling Paint on Walls
  • Sagging or Damaged Ceilings, Floors, and Walls
  • Strange Noises in Plumbing

2. Inspect Your Drains

Have you noticed water backing up in your sink? Low water pressure? By catching problems early with your drains, you can eliminate expensive repairs or further damage to your pipes. If you’re concerned there might be a clog in your drain, avoid using chemical drain cleaner or bent wire hangers to fix the problem. Instead, contact a professional drain cleaner who will remove the clog for you, clean your drains, and do so without causing damage to your pipes.

3. Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Over time, your garbage disposal can start to smell and decrease in efficiency. By cleaning it regularly, however, you can keep it running smoothly, keep your kitchen smelling fresh, and prevent odors and debris from building up. A good way to clean your garbage disposal includes using baking soda, vinegar, and running water.

4. Inspect Your Toilet

When you are scrubbing your bathtub and sinks this spring, make sure you are also paying attention to your toilet. If you notice any leaks, worn out parts, or parts that need to be adjusted, contact a plumber right away. Sometimes with toilets, it can be tough to spot a leak. Just because you don’t see water around your toilet, doesn’t mean there’s not a problem. One good way to inspect your toilet for leaks is to do the food coloring trick. Put food coloring in the toilet bowl and wait. If the toilet water is clear after 30 minutes, then it means you have a leak.

5. Have Your Plumbing System Maintained Professionally

Having a professional plumber maintain your system annually is a great way to ensure everything is in good, working condition. Maintenance can prevent major plumbing problems, catch problems early on, and avoid expensive issues in the long run.
